What We Read This Summer
By Susan W. Simpson
Well, the final tally on the Adult Summer Reading Club
is in! During July, participants completed 285 Reader’s Logs ranking 1,363
books and 58 audiobooks. The program was made possible by financial support
from the Friends of the Library groups from Bogue Banks Public Library,
Carteret County Public Library, and Western Carteret Library.
In keeping with the relaxed season the rules and
guidelines were minimal. Participants that turned in Reader’s Logs received
a tote bag with the original logo “Library Users Are the Best Recyclers” and
were automatically entered in a drawing for one of three prizes: wind
chimes, a birdhouse, or a butterfly bush.
Winners of the prizes at the Bogue Banks Library were:
Carol McVitty (Pine Knoll Shores), Peg Stone (Pine Knoll Shores), and Candi
Lupton (Morehead City). The winners at the Carteret County Public Library
were: June Smith, (Beaufort), Carol Cannon (Beaufort), and Charlotte Harris
(Morehead City). Western Carteret Public Library winners were: Aleczina
Briley (Morehead City), Tiffany McNamara (Emerald Isle), and Carol Osika
(Emerald Isle).
Of the 1,363 books read the authors receiving the most
“3’s”, or most highly recommended, were Nora Roberts, James Patterson, Janet
Evanovich, Jodi Picoult, and Mary Higgins Clark.
The most read titles were: Change of Heart by Jodi
Picoult, Sunday at Tiffany’s by James Patterson, Sail by James Patterson,
Appeal by John Grisham, Body Surfing by Anita Shreve, Eat Pray Love by
Elizabeth Gilbert, and Fearless Fourteen by Janet Evanovich.
The popular audiobook authors were: Mary Pope Osborne,
Janet Evanovich, Stuart Woods, and Elliot Engel.
We appreciate the great response the program received,
and are grateful to the Friends groups for their support. Plans are already
underway to do the Adult Reading Club again next summer. In the meantime
extra tote bags are available for $2.00 at the libraries; proceeds go to the
Friends groups.
