Art @ the Library

The display case is featuring the biological artifacts of November’s favorite bird, the turkey. Dr. Charles Manooch, III has been a turkey hunter turned turkey whisperer and is now an avid nature observer. He enjoys spending time watching the majestic animals through his scope.
He worked as a fisheries scientist and professional conservationist from Morehead City. Dr. Manooch was a researcher who worked at the NOAA Laboratory in Beaufort. He has written many books about his life growing up in North Carolina that can be found here at the library. The shelf holds three tail feathers, a string of talons, and two turkey beards. The original
acrylic painting of turkeys is by Duane Raver, Jr., a talented artist with a scientist’s eye for detail. He is very detailed in his paintings, counting feather patterns and making sure everything, even the setting, is authentic. Often, his paintings are more accurate than photographs. Raver’s
work can be seen here at the library in the 1984 book Fisherman’s Guide: Fishes of the Southeastern United States, written by Dr. Charles S. Manooch, III. It contains 150 original color illustrations created by Mr. Raver.
