Abstract
Collection includes manuscripts, correspondence, ancestry/family charts, family histories, original indexes, bound volumes, microfilm and other materials of genealogical or historical importance. All items were collected or written by Ethel T. Elliott. Topics include the genealogy of Carteret County families as well as New Jersey, New York, and other locations. This collection reflects Mrs. Elliott’s pursuit of genealogical research and her interest in the local history of the places she lived.

Biographical Note
Ethel May Biringer Thomas Elliott (1914-1990) was born in Elizabeth, New Jersey. She became the town historian for Norwich, New Jersey and conducted her own radio show there called “Your Family Tree.” Ethel was a member of the Carteret Historical Research Association and was editor of the first issues of their newsletter, The Researcher. Ethel worked as a professional genealogist for individuals interested in their Carteret County roots. Several of her works have been published, including the New Bern National Cemetery directory, Wilmington National Cemetery directory, the Slave census of Carteret County, 1850 & 1860, and Marriage bonds of Carteret County, North Carolina. Ethel donated her collection of history and genealogical materials to the Carteret County Public Library in 1990, a few months before her death in June. See Also: “Ethel T. Elliott” vertical file.

Arrangement
The bulk of this collection is file folders stored in the Ethel T. Elliott Vertical File, located in the library’s existing Reference area. The folders are in alphabetical order. All folder names are original unless otherwise noted. Each folder has a “Folder Identification Sheet” which includes subject information as well as changes made to the folder.

All bound volumes have been added to the library’s existing Local History and Genealogy shelving. Each volume is affixed with an Ethel T. Elliott Collection book plate. Notebooks are shelved in alphabetical order in a locked case. Microfilm rolls have been added to the library’s existing microfilm cabinets. Oversized documents have been moved to flat file storage.

All items in this collection and their locations are noted in the Ethel T. Elliott Collection Database.
