Abstract |
|
Collection includes manuscripts, correspondence, ancestry/family charts,
family histories, original indexes, bound volumes, microfilm and other
materials of genealogical or historical importance. All items were collected
or written by Ethel T. Elliott. Topics include the genealogy of Carteret
County families as well as New Jersey, New York, and other locations. This
collection reflects Mrs. Elliott’s pursuit of genealogical research and her
interest in the local history of the places she lived. |

Biographical Note |
| Ethel
May Biringer Thomas Elliott (1914-1990) was born in Elizabeth, New Jersey.
She became the town historian for Norwich, New Jersey and conducted her own
radio show there called “Your Family Tree.” Ethel was a member of the
Carteret Historical Research Association and was editor of the first issues
of their newsletter, The Researcher. Ethel worked as a professional
genealogist for individuals interested in their Carteret County roots.
Several of her works have been published, including the New Bern National
Cemetery directory, Wilmington National Cemetery directory, the Slave census
of Carteret County, 1850 & 1860, and Marriage bonds of Carteret County,
North Carolina. Ethel donated her collection of history and genealogical
materials to the Carteret County Public Library in 1990, a few months before

Arrangement |
The
bulk of this collection is file folders stored in the Ethel T. Elliott
Vertical File, located in the library’s existing Reference area. The folders
are in alphabetical order. All folder names are original unless otherwise
noted. Each folder has a “Folder Identification Sheet” which includes
subject information as well as changes made to the folder.
All bound volumes have been added to the library’s existing Local History
and Genealogy shelving. Each volume is affixed with an Ethel T. Elliott
Collection book plate. Notebooks are shelved in alphabetical order in a
locked case. Microfilm rolls have been added to the library’s existing
microfilm cabinets. Oversized documents have been moved to flat file
storage.
