Libraries plan for the eclipse

 LIBRARIES PLAN FOR ECLIPSE

Public libraries are helping communities prepare for and celebrate what has been called the “Celestial Event of the Century!” a solar eclipse on August 21, 2017.

Although not total in Craven, Pamlico, or Carteret counties, the sun will be significantly blocked, requiring special glasses for safe direct viewing. CPC Regional Library has received 2,000* of these glasses from the Space Science Institute through a grant from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, Google, and Research Corporation.

In August the libraries are hosting a “Community Read”. Everyone in Craven, Pamlico, and Carteret counties are asked to read Jade Dragon Mountain by Elsa Hart. Set in China in the 18th century, the book involves the Emperor traveling from Beijing to the southwestern part of his empire to command an eclipse. The book is a murder mystery in the vein of Agatha Christie’s works, and features Li Du, an exiled imperial librarian, as the major sleuth.

Paperback copies of the book will be available on August 1st. Ebook and Eaudio formats are currently available from https://cpcregional.overdrive.com.

When told of the library’s plan for her first novel author Elsa Hart commented, “It's fantastic to think of Jade Dragon Mountain being a Community Read book. I hadn't yet made the connection between the eclipse this August and the eclipse at the center of the book – what perfect timing to schedule a read for this summer! Please do let me know how the read goes, and I'll be thinking of you this August when the sun goes dark.”

The Carteret County Public Library (Beaufort) has two special events planned:
